Term 3 Evaluations and Planning

The below links are an example of how I plan for teaching. The term evaluation demonstrates the aims of my teaching with professional reasons for adopting these aims. The planning reflects my understanding and implementation of the curriculum.

COL Staff Meeting

This is a slideshow I shared with senior staff regarding my progress with COL. The slides contained recommendations for teachers practise regarding collaborative writing, reflections and choosing prompts to capture the interest of boys.

In Maths we revisited a challenge we had right at the beginning of the year "The Spaghetti Marshmallow Challenge". We had to build the tallest free standing structure using only spaghetti, marshmallows and tape. This task promoted collaboration and problem solving

COL Presentation

This was a presentation I shared at a Community of Learning meeting. It demonstrates my use use of the 'Spirals of Inquiry' model and how I have developed professional relationships with colleagues across a network of schools.

Junk Food to Health Food

Health focus for the term was nutrition and the effects on the body. We discussed what was in food such as fats, minerals, vitamins etc. We also unpacked the effect 'Junk' food if consumed too often can have on the body. Below is an example of recreating a Junk food to make it healthier

Kristy's New Double Down

The New and Improved Double Down

Ingredients:

-2 skinless chicken breasts
-1 slice edam cheese
-1 slice of bacon
-Low fat mayonnaise
-Wholemeal bread crumbs
-Vegetable oil

Method:

1. Cover the 2 chicken breasts in the breadcrumbs then shallow fry in a pan for 5 minutes on each side or until cooked. Make sure to use low fat vegetable oil. Drain on kitchen paper.
2. Grill the bacon in the oven then drain on kitchen paper to remove any excess oil.
3. To assemble your double down, first you have to put one of your chicken breasts on a plate.
4. After that place the slice of edam cheese on top of the chicken. Put a little dollop of low fat mayonnaise then smooth out the mayonnaise.
5. Make sure that the bacon has fully drained and then put it on the first part of your double down.
6. Finally to top it all off put your second chicken breast on the double down.

Language Features in Songs

In writing the students had to recognise and select a range of descriptive language features in songs. This task was chosen in response to the aural learning style of the students. The students also had to collaborate on producing a coherent movie.

Cat's In the Cradle Phone Call

The above task was a response to reading the lyrics to 'Cat's in the Cradle'. Using GarageBand the children worked collaboratively to create an imagined phone call between the father and son. This task related to the verbal learning styles of the group members and promoted collaboration.

Surrounded By Elephants

The following link relates to incorporating 360 videos as a prompt for writing. I found this idea whilst researching innovative uses of ICT. This type of task helped motivate reluctant writers as it offered an interactive experience. I shared this idea with my colleagues who have used it in their own classrooms.

WALT - Use descriptive language features

We came face to face with the largest land animal on the planet, the African elephant. We described the events in the video as we experienced them. We were challenged to use at least 3 language features such as similes, metaphors, hyperbole, personification and alliteration.

Surrounded by Elephants by Ella

The severe sun was burning the back of my neck as I wandered around looking for wildlife. “Thump thump” I froze “Could it be…..” I turned around slowly and gasped, a herd of colossal mammals approached me curiously as I stood speechless. The elephant peered at me waving its wrinkled trunk around in my face as I stood there silently.

The herd of beasts looked just like its ancient ancestor, the mammoth. They walked towards me but they didn’t seem to be bothered as they started to rip out chunks of grass and devour it all. Their skin was hard and wrinkled like a leather case. Their menacing ivory tusks looked like a skewer stuck out from their face, I was petrified. While trumpeting with their trunks their ears flapped and waved like a kite wanting to fly free. The sky was a clear sapphire while the long emerald grass danced along in the wind. It looked like a beautiful paradise waiting to be explored and discovered.

IT Workshop - Creative

As part of my role in the IT team I researched innovative ways of incorporating IT into teacher practise. Below are the slides shared at the meeting

Music Videos used in Reading

I used music videos as a prompt to describe characters, settings and events. Using music in this way was in response to the different interests and learning styles in the classroom.

Three Levels of Learning

As part of our planning for Term 3 we received Professional Development from Julie Mills on the use of the Three levels of Learning within SOLO Taxonomy. The link takes you to an example of how I incorporated this in a maths lesson

Sentences in Te Reo

I received Professional Development from Jerome Edwards in incorporating Te Reo in the classroom. The video below is an example of a follow up task I used.

IT Workshops

During term 1 - As part of my leadership role with ICT I offered workshops on incorporating ICT into the classroom.

Persuasive Writing

The below links show how I differentiated a writing lesson on persuasive writing. The students were given choice to as how they could persuade someone to buy a product. The options given related to the different learning styles (verbal, aural and visual learners) within the classroom

KANBAN Board

I implemented a KANBAN Board into my classroom programme afetr seeing a post on May Road Blog. This strategy was supported by an article on Strategies for dealing with attention problems -
”A notebook with three sections labeled "Work to be Completed," "Work Completed" and "Work to be Saved" may be used to help students organize their assignments. Color-coding notebooks for different subjects may also be helpful for organizing work”
KANBAN Observation “Dividing the lesson into four sections: Brainstorm/Modelling, Choosing of Wonder, Identifying Key Words and presenting Summary and giving each section a clear timeframe provided structure for the lesson. Using the KANBAN board, pairs were able to move their names along giving a visual representation of how their task was progressing. This provided clear accountability for the students” This links to the research in the following article suggesting that students with poor attention spans need tasks broken into pieces and including physical activity (getting up to move name on board) 7 ways to increase student attention span

Digital Citizenship Display and Article

The article on digital citizenship describes five ways that students’ digital footprints can impact them long after they leave school. Digital citizenship lessons often focus on Internet safety, online predators and cyberbullying. While those conversations are vital, students need always to be aware of what they do online and how their posts, photos and comments can impact them beyond their school years.
